Accomplishments
  • The information on contribution of women in agriculture is fragmental. Therefore, NRCWA took up the responsibility of creating a database on women in agriculture. A publication ‘Understanding Farm Women’ has been brought out which contains global information about the contribution of women in agriculture.

  • Similarly we are developing database on technologies developed by various institutions for farmwomen, so that researchers and extension workers will have the information available at once place.

  • Considering the drudgery faced by women in rice transplanting a study on “Transplanting of rice by women - an assessment of drudgery components” was conducted. The study highlighted that during the process of paddy transplanting women bent 11 times in an hour and on an average work for 6.11 hour per day in standing water out of which they remained in bending position for 5.37 hours. Some more important aspects of this research will be taken up during coming years.

  • The project on “Approaches to engendering agricultural research and extension” was launched in networking mode in three selected states namely Kerala, Haryana and Orissa for developing human resources for undertaking gender sensitive research and extension programmes. A training module entitled “Engendering Agricultural Research and Extension” has been developed for stakeholders and a lot of gender sensitive data, materials such as electronic media and reports have been gathered.

  • The project “Studies on eco-friendly integrated weed management” evaluated genotypes for weed suppression, threshold weed density and spacing dynamics with respect to rice and groundnut crop. The varieties having potentiality to support eco-friendly integrated weed management have been identified.

  • Project on “Involvement of farm women in agriculture and allied activities in the state of Madhya Pradesh” was taken up with 7346 women. Involvement of farm women in different activities and use of agricultural technologies was studied.

  • Under the project “Ergonomical Evaluation of Manually Operated Cleaner Grader, Seed Drill, Fertilizer Broadcaster and Ridger with Women Workers” 15 equipments were evaluated and found suitable for women. These can suitably be taken for commercial manufacture for making available to farmwomen for reducing drudgery and enhanced output.

  • Project entitled “Popularization of eco-friendly pest management technologies for vegetable among farm women in homestead lands” identified technological gaps and available ITKs.

  • Under the project “Efficient resource management of women agricultural labourers (WALs)”, the living conditions of WALs, their employment status, and factors affecting their efficiency were studied.

  • The project “Standardization of weaning mix using different proportions of sweet potato” attempted to combat infant malnutrition through developing a low cost weaning mix enriched with protein and vitamin.

  • In the project “Studies on sustainable aquaculture packages for empowering rural women” low cost aquacultural package of practices suitable for rural women have been identified.

  • The projects on “Family based economic security of backward communities through ornamental and integrated fish farming” and “Involving women in aquaculture – A step towards economic and nutritional security” were taken up on development-cum-research mode for testing the recommended technologies. The participatory trials in fishery have yielded worthwhile data on the potentiality of the technologies and methodologies of working with women in addition to nutritional and economic security of participating families.

  • NATP project on “Empowerment of women in agriculture” brought together six hundred farm women in SHGs and provided agricultural technologies for reducing drudgery and increasing the production and thereby promoting the economic and nutritional security of families.

  • Projects on “Data base on gender in agriculture”, “Modules for mobilization of rural women for sustainable livelihood through women self-help groups”, “Post harvest handling of vegetables”, “Refinement of invigoration techniques suitable to farm women for enhancing planting value of finger millet” and “Micro propagation of pointed gourd” were also taken up.
